MeT forecasts rain, snow in J&K till Feb 3

SRINAGAR (KIMS) — The Meteorological Department (MeT) on Saturday forecast light to moderate rain and snowfall at many places of Jammu and Kashmir till February 3.

The higher reaches of the Union Territory including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Peer Ki Gali, Sinthan Top, Razdan Pass, Zojila Pass etc received light snowfall during the last 24 hours.

“There is possibility of light snowfall at isolated higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir towards late evening,” an official of the Meteorological Department (MeT) said.

“There is possibility of light to moderate rain and snowfall at many places of Jammu and Kashmir from January 28 to February 3,” he said.

The MeT department also advised travellers to plan their trips accordingly as snowfall may lead to temporary closure of roads of higher reaches and important passes like Sinthan pass, Mughal Road, Sadhna, Razdan Pass, Zojila Pass etc during this period particularly from January 28 to 31.

Meanwhile, the Summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar recorded minus 2.3°C, Qazigund minus 2.2°C, Kupwara minus 2.4°C, Gulmarg minus 6.4°C, Pahalgam minus 5.1°C and Kokernag minus 0.8°C as the Minimum temperature in Kashmir region on Saturday.

The Winter capital, Jammu recorded 7.0°C, Katra 7.6°C, Batote 3.1°C, Bhaderwah minus 0.2°C and Banihal 0.4°C as the Minimum temperature in Jammu region.

In Ladakh region, Leh recorded minus 9.8°C and Kargil minus 10.5°C as the Minimum temperature.

Kashmir is reeling under 40-day long period of harsh winter cold known as the ‘Chillai Kalan’. It started on December 21, 2023 and will end on January 31, 2024. it will be followed by a 20-day long ‘Chillai Khurd’ and a 10-day-long ‘Chilla Bachha’. — (KIMS)
