Sopore attack leaves two civilians, two cops dead

Attack widely condemned 

SOPORE — Two civilians and as many cops were killed and three others were injured in an attack in Sopore town in North Kashmir on Saturday.

Reports said that suspected militants fired upon a joint party of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and police near Main Chowk Sopore, resulting in injuries to seven persons including four cops and three civilians.

They said all the injured were shifted to nearby hospital for treatment where two cops and two civilians were declared brought dead. Three other injured persons are being treated at Hospital.

The cops who were killed in this attack have been identified as Constable Waseem Ahmad son of Mohammad Sadiq Bhat of Narbal Srinagar and Showkat Ahmad son of Ab Gani Parray of Goripora Beerwah Budgam. The injured cops have been identified as SPO Danish Ahmad. Another injured cop Mukesh Kumar has been referred to Srinagar hospital for advanced treatment.

 The civilians who lost life in this attack have been identified as Bashir Ahmad Khan son of Gh Hassan of Mohalla Taliyan Sopore and Showkat Ahmad Shalla son of Gh Qadir of Shalimar Colony Sopore and the injured civilian has been identified as Nayeem Ahmad Khan son of Mohd Maqbool of Mahrajpora Sopore.

Meanwhile, Direct General of Police (DGP) Dilbagh Singh said that the militant outfit (LeT) Lashkar-i-Toiba is behind the Sopore attack that leaves four including two civilians dead.

Attack widely condemned

The militant attack in Sopore town on Saturday that leave four including two civilians dead has been widely condemned by the political leaders from Kashmir valley.

Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory Manoj Sinha strongly condemned the attack on security forces and civilians in Sopore. He expressed his condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and prayed for the early recovery of the injured.

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti along with People’s Conference Chief Sajad Lone express their shock and grief over the loss of lives in Sopore attack.

Mehbooba Mufti, President People’s Democratic Party (PDP) said, “Whether it is the gun of Delhi or our youth who have picked up arms, it can’t help us resolve the issue. Such incidents defame our Kashmir, we believe that non violence and dialogue is solution to every problem”.

In a tweet National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah said, “Terrible news coming in from Sopore. Such attacks must be condemned without reservation. Prayers for the injured & condolences to the families of the deceased.”

“Five succumb in Sopore attack. 3 civilians and 2 police men. Mr gunmen— Approximately—5 Kashmiri funerals. 5 widows. 10 grieving old parents. A dozen or more orphans. All Kashmiris. So mr gunmen. Really want to know. Whose bloody side r u on,” People’s Conference Chief Sajad Lone said in a tweet adding “When will this madness end. Gun came to Kashmir in 1989. 32 years down the line. I can unambiguously state. That gun enslaves the very people that it purports to fight for. The gunmen really need to ponder whose war they r fighting”. — (KIMS)
