SRINAGAR — Kashmir chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Sunday said he had been placed under house detention ahead of a scheduled religious sermon at Masjid Mehboob-ul-Alam (RA) in Zoonimar, Srinagar.
In a post on X, Mirwaiz said he was being detained for referring to a recently published International Crisis Group report on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir during his address at Jama Masjid on Friday.
“Apparently, stating uncomfortable facts and endorsing recommendations, out of concern for the future of my people and genuine peace in J&K and the region, is not acceptable to the ruling regime,” he wrote.
Expressing disappointment over the restrictions, Mirwaiz said people looking forward to attending the religious gathering, Majlis-e-Waaz, would be hugely disappointed. — (KIMS)
