SRINAGAR [Ahmad Ayaz] (KIMS) — Residents of rural Srinagar are facing a severe water crisis, with many still forced to rely on water drawn directly from the River Jhelum due to the lack of a regular drinking water supply.
Despite the promises of the ‘HAR GHAR NAL, HAR GHAR JAL’ scheme, areas like Mohalla Gurhanjipora Takanwari, just 9 km from Lal Chowk and within the Eidgah Assembly Constituency, remain without access to piped water, leading to significant health risks and growing frustration among the affected communities.
In a press statement, Ahmad Ayaz, a renowned social activist and national TV debater, raised concerns about the implementation of the ‘HAR GHAR NAL, HAR GHAR JAL’ scheme.
He questioned its effectiveness, pointing out that many rural areas, including Mohalla Gurhanjipora Takanwari—just 9 km from Lal Chowk in Srinagar, the summer capital of J&K, and within the Eidgah Assembly Constituency—are still forced to use drinking water directly from the River Jhelum. Residents rely on a self-constructed rubber pipe to draw water due to the lack of a regular drinking water supply.
Ayaz expressed regret that a pipeline laid by the PHE department 10 years ago has remained dry, with no action taken to address the issue.
He emphasized that this situation raises serious questions about the accountability of those responsible. The lack of a proper water supply not only poses significant health risks but also underscores the urgent need for intervention.
He suggested that the concerned authorities might be unaware of the area’s ongoing problem, calling for accountability and immediate action.
In the meantime, Ahmad Ayaz urged the authorities to provide tanker services to the affected residents to prevent a potential health crisis. He noted that the situation is dire and demands prompt attention. — (KIMS)
