Five armymen killed in Poonch attack

JAMMU (KIMS) — At least five armymen were killed and another was injured after their vehicle was fired upon by unidentified militants in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.

The incident took place around 3:00 pm when the Army vehicle was moving between Bhimber Gali and Poonch in the Rajouri sector.

The unidentified militants fired upon the Army vehicle, taking advantage of heavy rain and low visibility in the area. The vehicle caught fire due to the likely use of grenades by militants, Lt Col Devender Anand, PRO Defense, Jammu said in a statement.

Five personnel of the Rashtriya Rifles unit deployed for Counter Terrorist operations, in this area, have unfortunately lost their lives in the incident, the statement said.

Another seriously injured soldier was evacuated immediately to the Army Hospital at Rajouri and is under treatment, it said.

The deceased armymen have been identified as Hav Mandeep Singh from Ludhiana, Punjab, Sepoy Harkrishan Singh from Gurdaspur, Punjab, L/Nk Kulwant Singh from Moga, Punjab, Sepoy Sewak Singh from Bathinda, Punjab and L/Nk Debashish from Puri, Orissa. — (KIMS)
