SRINAGAR — Mithun Manhas has been elected as the 37th President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at the 94th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Mumbai.
He replaces Roger Binny, who resigned last month after turning 70.
“It’s an absolute honour to be the president of the world’s finest cricketing board. At the same time it’s a huge responsibility and I give my assurance that I’ll be committed to do it to the best of my abilities, dedication and passion,” Manhas said after being elected as BCCI president.
When asked what worked in his favour, he said, “Maybe my work, my credentials as a cricketer, as an administrator. For the past four years I’ve been at the J&K Cricket Association.”
Hailing from the Bhaderwah area of Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir, Mithun Manhas had a long domestic career from 1997-98 to 2016-17. He played 157 first-class matches, scoring 9,714 runs at an average of about 45.82, including 27 centuries and 49 fifties, with a highest score of 205*. He also appeared in 130 List A games, scoring 4,126 runs at an average of nearly 45.84. Overall, he played 91 T20 matches, including 55 appearances in the IPL where he scored 514 of his 1,170 T20 runs, with a highest score of 42* and a strike rate of around 109.36.
After retirement, he worked as a coach with various teams, including serving as batting consultant for the Bangladesh men’s Under-19 team. In the IPL, he has been part of the coaching staff of Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans.
He was also part of the BCCI-appointed sub-committee that ran the affairs of the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association.
