SRINAGAR (KIMS) — The Meteorological Department (MeT) on Friday forecast light rain and snowfall in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir from January 26.
“The weather will continue to remain dry in Jammu and Kashmir till January 24 with generally cloudy weather on the evening of January 20,” an official of the Meteorological Department (MeT) said.
“The isolated higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir are expected to receive light snowfall on January 25, while light rain and snowfall is expected over scattered places of the Union Territory from January 26 to 28,” he said.
“As per indications of different weather models, there is possibility of light to moderate rain and snowfall at many places, however detailed information will be shared in coming days,” he said.
“There is redevelopment of moderate to dense fog and fall in day temperature over Jammu division during next three days,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar recorded minus 4.9°C, Qazigund and Kupwara each minus 5.0°C, Pahalgam minus 6.3°C, Gulmarg minus 3.6°C and Kokernag minus 1.4°C as the Minimum temperature in Kashmir region on Friday.
The Winter Capital, Jammu recorded 5.0°C, Katra 6.4°C, Batote minus 1.7°C, Bhaderwah minus 0.4°C and Banihal minus 0.8°C as the Minimum temperature in Jammu region.
In Ladakh region, Leh recorded minus 15.1°C and Kargil minus 12.6°C as the Minimum temperature.
Kashmir is reeling under 40-day long period of harsh winter cold known as the ‘Chillai Kalan’. So far, there has been no snowfall in Kashmir during this period.
The ‘Chillai Kalan’ started on December 21, 2023 and will end on January 31, 2024. it will be followed by a 20-day long ‘Chillai Khurd’ and a 10-day-long ‘Chilla Bachha’. — (KIMS)
