SRINAGAR, Farhan Kitab (KIMS) — Across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, young women are steadily breaking social barriers by excelling in sports, emerging as role models and inspiring future generations.
Among them is Ulfat Mushtaq, a resident of Rafiabad in North Kashmir, who has scripted history by becoming the first female cyclist from Kashmir to qualify for national-level competitions, marking a significant milestone for the Valley.
Speaking to media persons, Ulfat said she has participated in several competitive races with notable achievements. “I am a female cyclist from Kashmir and have competed in many races so far,” she said.
She recalled her early success in local circuits, including a 75-kilometre race from Kaman Post to Baramulla. Her performance in another 79-kilometre race from Bandipora to Srinagar earned her recognition and an award from Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
Ulfat said her major breakthrough came with her participation in the 29th National Cycling Championship in Odisha, where she was selected for the National Games of India. “I became the first female cyclist from Kashmir to reach this level,” she said.
Continuing her upward journey, she competed in the 30th National Championship in Sambalpur, Odisha, further strengthening her national presence.
Currently, Ulfat is in Kurukshetra, Haryana, representing Jammu and Kashmir at the Khelo India Asmita Women’s League. “My performance here has been encouraging and has helped me secure a position,” she said.
Expressing confidence about the future, Ulfat said her performance is improving with each competition. “The day is not far when I will fulfil my dream of representing Kashmir at the international level,” she added.
She also highlighted the challenges faced by athletes from the region. “We come from a place where sports facilities and training environments are limited, but passion and hard work have kept us moving forward,” she said, adding that athletes from Kashmir have always tried to represent the region “with beautiful colours.”
Calling it a proud moment, Ulfat said girls from Jammu and Kashmir have not only participated in national-level events but also secured positions. “We daughters are not lagging behind in any way. We are ready to face every challenge and represent a positive image of Kashmir,” she said.
Appealing to young girls, Ulfat urged them to follow their dreams. “Believe in yourself, pursue your passion, and do not delay in fulfilling your aspirations. Only you can make it happen,” she said. — (KIMS)
