Najam Sethi likely to replace Ramiz Raja as PCB Chairman

ISLAMABAD — Najam Sethi is set to replace Ramiz Raja as the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), according to a report by Cricket Pakistan.

Imran Khan was dismissed Sunday as Pakistan’s prime minister after losing a no-confidence vote in the national assembly.

A new premier will be chosen Monday, with Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) chief Shehbaz Sharif likely to replace Khan.

The report added, while citing sources, that Raja will soon resign from his role as the PCB Chairman. He is currently in Dubai for the ICC Board meeting.

“Sethi has close ties with the opposition leader and potential new Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. He is keen on returning to the cricket board and preliminary talks have already been started,” the report said.

The former PCB Chairman, Sethi, stepped down in 2018 when Imran was sworn in as the prime minister. He was appointed on a three-year term in 2017, however his sour relationship with Khan resulted in his early exit. Sethi has also worked as PCB Chairman in 2013 and 2014.

Sethi was also the chairman of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), when it was launched in 2016.

“Sethi wants to complete some of his unfinished business in PCB while he is also very interested in making PSL a bigger brand which was started in his time. Some of his close ones are also likely to return to PCB,” the report added.

It must be noted that former Pakistan captain and 1992 World Cup winner, Raja, was elected unanimously and unopposed as the PCB’s 36th Chairman for a three-year term in September last year.
