107 goats killed in lightning strike in Anantnag

Authorities assess losses, assure compensation to affected families

ANANTNAG, Raouf Dar (KIMS) — Around 107 goats and a few sheep were killed after a lightning strike hit the sub-alpine pastures of Lehendajan in Dachnipora block of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district during the intervening night of May 20 and 21, officials said.

Soon after the incident, a team from the Sheep Husbandry Department rushed to the site and carried out post-mortem examinations and other necessary formalities while assessing the losses.

Sheep Husbandry Officer Anantnag, Dr Qysheed Hussain, exclusively told KIMS that a team had been deputed to conduct post-mortem examinations and complete the required formalities.

“The loss assessment has been completed and the affected families will be compensated,” he said.

Officials said the livestock belonged to several nomadic families who had moved to the higher reaches of Reshkulbal Aishmuqam for the summer grazing season.

The affected livestock owners include Haji Mohd Bashir Boked (14 goats), Nazir Ahmad Boked (20 goats), Basit Ali (13 goats), Zafar Iqbal (21 goats), Khalid Ahmad (14 goats), Mohd Sadiq (12 goats and three sheep), and Anzar Ali (10 goats).

The incident caused heavy losses to the affected families, who largely depend on livestock for their livelihood with locals urging the authorities to ensure swift relief and compensation. — (KIMS)
