REASI — Jammu and Kashmir Police in Reasi recovered 2.72 grams of heroin (chitta) from a motorcyclist during a checking operation near Moori Bridge ahead of the Navratri festival, officials said on Saturday.
Police said a team from Police Post Kakryal had established a special checkpoint to check vehicles and pedestrians as part of enhanced security measures ahead of Navratri 2026.
At around 6:50 pm, a motorcycle bearing registration number JK20C-1200, travelling from Jammu towards Katra, was intercepted for checking. During the frisking of the rider, police recovered approximately 2.72 grams of heroin from a black polythene bag in his possession.
The accused was identified as Ujjwal Mehra, son of Ganesh Mehra, a resident of Ward No. 3, near Durga Bhawan, Katra.
In this connection, FIR No. 319/2026 under Sections 8, 21 and 22 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at Police Station Katra, and further investigation is underway, police said.
Reasi Police said checking and frisking operations have been intensified across the district to ensure the safety of pilgrims and the public and to curb drug trafficking and other unlawful activities ahead of the festival. — (KIMS)
