BJP Sarpanch, wife shot dead in Anantnag; LeT behind attack, says IGP

SRINAGAR — Unknown gunman on Monday shot dead a Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) Sarpanch and his wife in Lal Chowk area of Anantnag district in South Kashmir.

Reports said, unknown gunman barged into the rented accommodation of BJP Sarpanch and fired indiscriminately, resulting in serious injuries to Sarpanch and his wife.

The couple was shifted to Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag for treatment where doctors declared them brought dead.

The duo has been identified as Ghulam Rasool Dar (Sarpanch) and his wife Jawhaira (Panch) from Redwani area of Kulgam district in South Kashmir.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar said, “militant outfit Laahkar-i-Toiba (LeT) is behind the attack, killing Sarpanch and his wife”.

“They were staying in a secure hotel accommodation until recently and were allowed to stay at their house on their request,” he added.

BJP district president Kulgam termed the killings as political killings and said, “BJP is growing largely which is frustrating others. LG Manoj Sinha should take concrete steps to avoid such killings in future as we have already lost number of workers in South Kashmir. — (KIMS)
