Copper wire theft: Six non-locals, local woman arrested by Railway Police

SRINAGAR — Railway Police Tuesday said that they have busted a gang of seven thieves, including six non-locals and a local woman, allegedly involved in the copper wire theft in summer capital Srinagar.

A Railway Police spokesperson in a statement said that they were arrested from Shergari Haft Chinar and Parimpora areas of Srinagar city and recovered from their possession an OHE Copper Wire worth Rs 180,000, one Auto-Rickshaw (JK16-1304) and weapons of offence including hexa blade, cutter, rope and earthing wire.

“The accused persons have been identified as Iqbal Sheikh, a resident of Kolkata presently living at Haft Chinar, Shair Ali, a resident of West New Delhi presently living at Haft Chinar, Sahil Sheikh, a resident of New Delhi presently living at HMT Srinagar, Haroon Suhail, a resident of New Delhi, presently living at HMT, Suhaq Saleem, a resident of Kolkata, presently living at HMT, Shaheen Sheikh, a resident of New Delhi presently living at HMT and Nargis Alias Panna, a local resident of Haft Chinar Srinagar,” said the spokesperson in the statement.

The accused were involved in the theft of OHE copper wire on the railway track at kilometer 56.7 committed during the intervening night of 30 and 31 March this year, said the official, adding that after the theft incident, police had registered an FIR vide number 4/202 under section 379, 427, 411, 109 IPC and 104, 109, 174 Railway Act of GRPS Srinagar.

“The group has been found committing the OHE wire thefts in the jurisdiction of GRPS Srinagar on the track sites by resorting to consumption of drugs provided by the accused lady and using the auto-rickshaw under question and the weapons of offense for the commission of crime,” the spokesperson said.

The accused are being interrogated about their involvement in other similar cases registered in the GRPS Awantipora, the spokesperson added. — (KDC)
