Former militant commander turned separatist leader arrested in 1996 case in Srinagar

SRINAGAR — Police in Srinagar today arrested a man wanted for his alleged involvement in a decades-old militancy-related case registered at Police Station Shergari.

A police official told news agency Kashmir Dot Com (KDC) that one Javeed Ahmad Mir alias Javeed Nalka, son of Mohammad Yousuf Mir and a resident of Zaina Kadal, Srinagar, was taken into custody by Shergari Police.

He is accused in FIR No. 192/1996, registered under Sections 341, 148, 336, 332 of the RPC, 7/27 Arms Act, and Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, dating back to 17 July 1996.

Police said Mir has been detained at Police Station Shergari, where further legal proceedings are underway.

Before joining separatist political activities, he was known to have been a former militant commander in the early 1990s. He later surrendered and became active in separatist politics. He was associated with JKLF now banned.

Sources told KDC that according to the FIR and case records, Mir along with others were accused of leading a large procession in July 1996, during which a mob carrying the body of slain militant Hilal Ahmad Beigh clashed with police at Naaz Crossing, Srinagar.

The mob allegedly indulged in stone pelting, rioting, and anti-India sloganeering, resulting in injuries to police personnel and damage to public property.

The 1996 Shergari FIR had named prominent separatist figures including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Abdul Gani Lone, Wakeel, Nayeem Khan, Shabir Shah, Shakeel Bakshi, and Javed Mir. — (KDC)
