JAMMU — Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag has become the first newly established medical institution in Jammu and Kashmir to receive approval for a superspeciality cardiology course, officials said on Wednesday.
According to a statement, the National Board of Examinations has accredited three Dr NB Cardiology seats to the Department of Cardiology at GMC Anantnag.
Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo termed the approval a reflection of the government’s resolve to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and medical education in the Union Territory.
She said the move would enhance tertiary care services in south Kashmir and reduce the need for patients to travel outside the region for advanced cardiac treatment.
The minister added that the government is focusing on upgrading medical institutions through infrastructure development, recruitment of specialist faculty, procurement of advanced equipment and expansion of academic programmes.
“With the introduction of the superspeciality cardiology course, GMC Anantnag is poised to emerge as a key hub for advanced cardiac care, research and training,” Itoo said, adding that the initiative would benefit cardiac patients by ensuring timely specialised treatment closer to home while also creating new opportunities for postgraduate medical aspirants. — (PTI)
