SRINAGAR (KIMS) — Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena on Monday announced the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory, calling it a historic decision aimed at strengthening governance and fulfilling a long-pending demand of the people.
In a post on X, Saxena said he had approved the notification for the formation of Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar and Drass as new districts.
With the addition of these five districts, Ladakh will now have seven districts instead of the existing two.
The Lieutenant Governor said the move was in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a developed and prosperous Ladakh.
He said the decision, which had already received approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs in August 2024 under the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, would strengthen grassroots governance, decentralise administration and ensure faster delivery of public services, particularly in remote and far-flung areas.
Saxena said the creation of new districts would also open new avenues for growth, employment and entrepreneurship in the region.
He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the people of Ladakh benefit from what he termed a transformative and historic decision.
Ladakh was created as a Union Territory in August 2019 after the bifurcation of erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories and it had two districts Leh and Kargil. — (KIMS)
