MeT forecasts dry weather in J&K as 40-day-long ‘Chillai Kalan’ ends

SRINAGAR — As the 40-day-long period of harsh winter known as the ‘Chillai Kalan’, which started on December 21 ended, the Meteorological Department on Monday forecast dry weather in Jammu and Kashmir for next 24 hours.

The Union Territory received heavy snowfall during the last 24 hours which disrupted the normal life in the valley and also affected land and air traffic.

An official of the Meteorological Department said, weather is likely to remain dry in J&K during the next 24 hours.

He said Srinagar recorded Zero degrees Celsius while Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded minus 4.7 degrees Celsius and minus 8.4 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature.

In Jammu region he said, Jammu recorded 7.1 degrees Celsius, Katra 6.1 degrees Celsius, Bhaderwah 0.2 degrees Celsius while Batote and Banihal recorded minus 0.5 degrees Celsius and 0.4 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature.

In Ladakh region he said, Kargil recorded minus 10.2 degrees Celsius and Leh recorded minus 8.0 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature.

The 40-day long period of harsh winter known as ‘Chillai Kalan’, which started on December 21 has ended. From today 20-day-long ‘Chilai Khurd’ will begin. It will be followed by 10-day-long ‘Chillai Bache’. — (KIMS)
