SRINAGAR (KIMS) — In a significant move, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India, announced the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory of Ladakh on Monday.
The newly created districts are Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang.
India’s Home Minister, Amit Shah, announced the creation of the five districts in a post on X, stating, “In pursuit of PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the MHA has decided to create five new districts in the union territory. This move will bring the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny.”
“The Modi government is committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh,” he added.
Ladakh was previously part of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. It came into existence as a separate Union Territory after the Government of India abrogated Article 370 and Article 35(A), bifurcating the state into two Union Territories — Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Prior to this, Ladakh had two districts — Leh and Kargil. — (KIMS)
