Minor girl dies after slipping into Nallah in Handwara

SRINAGAR — A 3-year-old girl died after slipping into Mawar Nallah in Naugam Handwara in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Reports reaching GNS said that one Aaliya Rafiq, daughter of Mohammad Rafiq Chechi, was alongside her sister, when she accidently fell off a bridge into Mawar Nallah.

The minor girl was evacuated from the water source and taken to District Hospital Handwara, from where the doctors referred her to a Srinagar hospital, where the doctors however declared her as dead on arrival.

Back home, the native village of the deceased girl protested against authorities over their alleged failure to construct a broad bridge to ensure free movement of the public.

“It is a small bridge constructed decades before which hardly enables movement of a vehicle at a time”, a local said adding the bridge has failed to cater the increasing flow of traffic and thereby putting the lives of commuters at risk besides leading to frequent traffic jams.

“The authorities have failed to do anything in this regard despite representations made from time to time”, they told GNS. — (GNS)
