Mirwaiz placed under house arrest ahead of Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid: Anjuman Auqaf

SRINAGAR (KIMS) — Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has been placed under house arrest ahead of Friday congregation at historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, Anjuman Auqaf said on Friday.

While strongly denouncing the repeated house arrest of Mirwaiz, especially on Friday’s disabling him from visiting Jamia Masjid to deliver the sermon and participate in the mandatory Friday prayers, Anjuman Auqaf, the management body of the Jamia Masjid said, Mirwaiz has again been put under house arrest today ahead of the Friday congregation in Jamia Masjid.

Anjuman said, Mirwaiz was to give a special sermon today on the occasion of Shab-e-Mehraj at Jamia Masjid, as had been announced by the management body.

A large gathering of people were expected at the mosque today to hear the Mirwaiz’s sermon and participate in the blessed congregation. But early in the morning, a contingent of police vehicles was stationed outside his residence and he was detained, it said.

It is pertinent to mention that since his release from house arrest in September last year, Mirwaiz has been allowed to deliver Friday sermon on three Fridays only, Anjuman Auqaf said. — (KIMS)
