Mirwaiz placed under house arrest, prevented from offering prayers at Jamia Masjid Srinagar

SRINAGAR (KIMS) — Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday claimed that he was placed under house arrest and prevented from offering congregational Friday prayers and delivering the sermon at the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar.

In a post on X, Mirwaiz said no reason was communicated to him by the authorities for the restrictions.

He alleged that the timing of the restrictions came soon after the Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) raised concerns over the sale of pork in Kashmir. Such action reflected a shrinking space for raising public and religious issues in Jammu and Kashmir.

Mirwaiz further alleged that arrests and restrictions would neither address public concerns nor prevent people from raising them. — (KIMS)
