Mohammed Shami announces retirement from Test cricket

SRINAGAR — Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing an end to a 64-match career in which he claimed 229 wickets, including six five-wicket hauls.

The 36-year-old announced his decision through a post on Instagram, ending a career that saw him emerge as one of India’s most dependable fast bowlers across conditions.

Shami made his Test debut against the West Indies in 2013 and went on to become a key member of India’s pace attack. He claimed 145 wickets in 41 away Tests at an average of 30.33, while taking 76 wickets in 23 home Tests at an average of 22.1.

Among his memorable performances were a five-wicket haul in the Johannesburg Test during India’s 2018 tour of South Africa and an eight-wicket match haul at Centurion during the subsequent tour.

His final Test appearance came in the 2023 ICC World Test Championship final against Australia. Despite injuries interrupting different phases of his career, Shami remained a significant contributor to India’s bowling attack.
