Nowgam, Srinagar encounter ends with killing of three Lashkar militants

SRINAGAR — Three Lashkar-i-Toiba (LeT) militants were killed in a encounter between government forces and militants at Nowgam area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Summer Capital, Srinagar on Wednesday.

Reports said a joint team of government forces including J&K Police and CRPF had launched Cordon-and-Search-Operation (CASO) at Nowgam following the inputs about presence of militants in the area.

They said that as the joint team of forces approached the suspected spot, militants fired upon them which was retaliated, triggering an encounter.

In the encounter, three Lashkar-i-Toiba (LeT) militants were killed and they have been identified as Adil Nabi Teli, resident of Galchibal Chandhara, Pampore, Shakir Ahmad Tantray, resident of Ronipora, Shopian and Yasir Ahmad Wagay resident of Kujer Frisal, Kulgam.

Arms and ammunition including one AK rifle, 03 AK Magazines, 14 AK rounds, two Pistols, 4 Pistol Magazines and 06 Pistol rounds were recovered from the site of encounter.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar said, “the militants killed in Nowgam encounter were involved in killing of Sarpanch Sameer Ahmad Bhat at Khonmoh, Srinagar. Besides they were planning to attack on security forces on the national highway”.

IGP Kashmir termed the killing of three militants as a big success and said, “this module was targeting Panchayat representatives as their masters don’t want grassroots democracy to flourish here”.

Meanwhile, train service between Banihal-Baramulla has been suspended by authorities on Wednesday in view of encounter at Nowfam. — (KIMS)
