Parvez Rasool, first international cricketer from J&K announces retirement

SRINAGAR (KIMS) — Jammu and Kashmir all-rounder Parvez Rasool, the first cricketer from the region to represent India, announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Sunday, bringing down the curtain on a remarkable 17-year career that inspired many of players from the Union Territory.

Rasool made the announcement through a heartfelt note on social media, writing, “Alhamdu lillah for everything. Today, with mixed emotions, I announce my retirement from professional cricket. It’s been an incredible journey, one filled with dreams, hard work, joy, and countless memories that I will cherish forever. From local grounds to representing my team and my country, in cricket Allah has given me everything I ever wished for. Thankful to my family, coaches, teammates, and fans for their love, trust, and constant support throughout this journey. Every moment I’ve spent on the field has been an honour and a blessing. Though I’m stepping away from professional cricket, I will continue to stay close to the game playing for passion, guiding youngsters, and giving back to the sport that shaped my life. Thank you everyone for the love, the faith, and the unforgettable memories.”

Rasool, who hails from Bijbehara town in Anantnag district of South Kashmir, represented India in one ODI and one T20I, becoming the first player from J&K to don the national colours. He also featured in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Pune Warriors India, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

A consistent performer in domestic cricket, Rasool played 95 First-Class matches, scoring 5,648 runs and taking 352 wickets. In List-A cricket, he amassed around 3,982 runs and 221 wickets, while in T20s, he scored 840 runs and claimed 60 wickets.

During his career, he twice won the Lala Amarnath Trophy for being the best all-rounder in the Ranji Trophy (2013–14 and 2017–18).

Rasool’s journey stands as a story of determination and resilience — paving the way for many aspiring cricketers from Jammu and Kashmir.

After announcing his retirement, Rasool said, he will continue contributing to the sport by mentoring young players. — (KIMS)
