Ruhullah opposes uniform Friday sermons, calls for withdrawal of Waqf Board order

SRINAGAR — Member of Parliament from Srinagar Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has opposed the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board’s reported move to introduce uniform Friday sermons at mosques across the Union Territory, calling for the order to be withdrawn immediately.

In a post on X, Ruhullah said the pulpit would lose its essence and institutional value if it surrendered to power.

He termed the Waqf Board’s reported plan to prescribe Friday sermons an “assault on our faith” and said no committee should decide what religious scholars, or Ulema, should say in mosques.

“The pulpits cannot be silenced with a circular,” he said, insisting that the pulpit was not open to negotiation.

His remarks came after a report by The Hindu stated that the J&K Waqf Board had pushed for uniform Friday sermons at mosques across the Union Territory, with the aim of ensuring that the topics discussed were decided in advance. — (KIMS)
