Shopian gunbattle ends with killing of two local militants, army personnel

Shopian (KIMS): Two local militants were killed in a gunbattle that broke out between government forces and militants at Wangam village in Shopian district in South Kashmir on Saturday.

Both the slain militants have been identified as Anayatullah Sheikh from Jamnagri Shopian and Adil Ahmad Sheikh from Kokarnag Anantnag.

Earlier, joint team of government forces including Indian Army’s 34RR (Rashtriya Rifles), Shopian Police and (CRPF) Central Reserve Police Force had launched Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Wangam village on Saturday evening following the inputs about presence of militants in the area.

One army personnel identified as Pinku Kumar from Uttar Pradesh was also killed during the gunbattle.

Arms and ammunition including One M4 Carbine Rifle, One AK47, Pistol and other incriminating material were recovered from the site of encounter.

Meanwhile authorities have snapped down mobile internet service in Shopian district as a precautionary measure. (KIMS)
