Strict restrictions continue in Kashmir on second day after protests over Khamenei killing

SRINAGAR — Strict restrictions remained in place across the Kashmir Valley for the second consecutive day on Tuesday following massive protests against the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei in joint airstrikes by the United States and Israel early Sunday.

While educational institutions were shut for two days and mobile internet speeds throttled on Monday as precautionary measures, authorities on Tuesday cancelled the movement of security force convoys across the Valley as protests turned violent at some places.

To avoid further tension, officials also decided not to deploy road opening parties of security forces on Tuesday.

At least 14 people, including six security personnel, were injured during Monday’s protests in Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials said 75 rallies were held at various places across the Kashmir Valley, while a few demonstrations were also reported from parts of the Jammu region.

This is the first time since August 2019 that protests on such a large scale have taken place in Kashmir.

The divisional administration appealed to people to exercise restraint and follow advisories issued by authorities.

“The divisional administration, Kashmir, acknowledges the role of all communities in maintaining peace and upholding law and order in the Valley. Citizens are advised to exercise restraint, adhere to advisories issued by the local administration, and share only verified information on digital platforms,” a spokesperson said.

A round-the-clock helpline (0194-2740003) has been established in Srinagar for those requiring assistance.

Police also appealed to people to refrain from violence and warned of strict legal action against instigators and those involved in unlawful activities.

Authorities had on Monday imposed restrictions on people’s movement, sealed the Ghanta Ghar at Lal Chowk with barricades, and deployed police and CRPF personnel across Srinagar to prevent gatherings.
