DUBAI — Australia thrashed New Zealand by 8 wickets to clinch their maiden T20 world cup in Dubai on Sunday. Glenn Maxwell scored the winning runs for the Aussies.
Mitchell Marsh won the man of the match whereas David Warner was declared the Man of the Tournament.
Chasing the target of 173 Australia lost skipper Finch early. Mitchell Marsh and David Warner got together and dominated the Kiwi bowlers. David Warner scored 53 runs off 38 balls. Mitchell Marsh scored 77 runs off 50 balls. Trent Boult dismissed David Warner in the 13th over but it was all little to late for the Kiwis.
New Zealand bowlers had nothing much to celebrate as Trent Boult was the only successful bowler picking the 2 wickets giving away 18 runs.
Earlier in the match, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson scored 85 runs off 48 balls as the blackcaps set the target of 173 runs. New Zealand had a slow start despite not losing many early wickets and they found themselves at 57/1 after 10 overs.
The Kiwis decided to shift gears and scored quick runs in the death overs, scoring 70 runs in the last 6 overs. For Australia Josh Hazlewood picked 3 wickets including the Kiwi skipper giving away only 16 runs and ended up being the most economical bowler. Adam Zampa picked 1 wicket.
Australia skipper Aaron Finch won the toss and opted to bowl.
This was for the second time that Australia made it to the final of the T20 world cup, previously being in 2010.
