Two local Lashkar militants, civilian killed in Shopian encounter

SHOPIAN — Two local Lashkar-i-Toiba (LeT) militants and a civilian were killed in an encounter between government forces and militants at Amshipora village in Shopian district of South Kashmir on Friday.

Reports said a joint team of government forces including Indian Army, J&K Police and CRPF had launched Cordon-and-Search-Operation (CASO) in Amshipora village following the inputs about presence of militants in the area.

They said that as the joint team of forces approached the suspected spot, militants fired upon them which was retaliated, triggering an encounter.

In the encounter, two Lashkar-i-Toiba (LeT) militants were killed and they have been identified as Muzamil Ahmad Mir son of Ab Hameed Mir, resident of Chatripora, Shopian and Shariq Ayoob son of Mohd Ayoob Wagay, resident of Bonpora Amshipora, Shopian.

A civilian identified as Shakeel Ahmed Khan son of Abdul Rahim Khan, resident of Amshipora Shopian was also killed during the encounter.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Vijay Kumar in a statement said, a civilian was seriously injured injured in the indiscriminate firing of the militants. The injured civilian while being evacuated for medical help succumbed to the injuries.

Muzamil was involved in several crimes, IGP added.

Incriminating materials including arms (one AK 56 rifle and one pistol) and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter.

Meanwhile, authorities have snapped down mobile internet service in Shopian district as a precautionary measure. — (KIMS)
