Kupwara Massacre 27th Anniversary: Shutdown observed in memory of 27 civilians

Srinagar (KIMS): A complete shutdown is being observed in Kupwara town in North Kashmir on Wednesday to mark the 27th anniversary of Kupwara Massacre.

All shops, business establishments remain closed in the town and traffic was not seen visible on roads.

On 27th January 1994, atleast 27 civilians mostly traders were killed and more than 30 were injured after army opened fire on them.

Media reports say, an army officer had asked local shopkeepers in Kupwara town to attend Republic Day function celebrations at local camp. The shopkeepers didn’t turn up at the camp to participate in celebrations. Next day on 27th January when they were opening their shops, armed personal came and fired at them, killing atleast 27 civilians including three policemen.

Since then, a complete shutdown is being observed in Kupwara town on 27th January to mark this day as Kupwara Massacre Day. (KIMS)
